Closet Reset Day 4 | Taking Care of Your Clothes

One of the best things you can do for your clothes is take care of them! Today on Closet Reset Day 4 we are sharing our tips and tricks for getting as much life out of your clothes as possible.

LAUNDRY

Less is more: Get more use out of your clothes before they hit the wash. If you get a little stain, you can often get away with just a spot treatment. Overwashing can cause garments to become misshapen, faded, and worn down. Cutting down on how often you do laundry can help keep your garments out of the landfill for longer.

Cold water is key: Cold water keeps fabric in better condition and it lowers your energy consumption. Win win!

Say no to the dryer: Over time the dryer will wear down your clothes faster than letting them hang dry. A folding dry rack or clothes line will be your best friend.

STAIN REMOVAL

Deodorant: Ever look down at your garments and see a big white deodorant streak across it. A quick hack that we use all the time is to find another piece of similar fabric or grab the edge of the piece you're currently wearing and rub it against your deodorant stain. It’s so simple that it seems like a magic trick. For reasons we can’t explain, this helps deodorant marks disappear in a flash.

Grease/oil stains: Dawn dish soap is your best friend, specifically the blue kind. Add a couple of drops with a dash of warm water to cover your stain and let this sit for a few hours or overnight if you have the time. Give it an extra boost by adding some baking soda and making a paste. After it’s had the chance to soak in, wash your garment as usual and the stain will be gone! It’s magical. And the best part is, it doesn’t matter how long the stain has been there! We’ve tried this on new and old set in stains with the same result.

MENDING/ALTERING

Find a local tailor/seamstress: If one thing holding you back from wearing an item is because it’s too long, or slightly too big – consider investing $20 and getting it altered or mended by a professional. It’s often worth the investment so you can start wearing your item more regularly  (bringing down the cost per wear 😉).

Needle and thread: For those times when buttons pop off or your pockets begin to fray, having a mending kit in your home to do small fixes yourself will ensure you can keep wearing the clothes you love. And we think it’s satisfying to fix something yourself.

LOVING YOUR BODY

Seasons change. Trends change. Everything changes and we expect it. Except when it comes to our bodies. This final aspect of slow fashion care is not just about loving our clothes, but also loving ourselves. Your body will change – it’s the act of being alive. Have you ever stopped yourself from buying clothes because you worried your body would change? Or you want your body to look different before you invest in a new garment?

We believe it is an act of love to buy for your body as it is now. Of course, we acknowledge there may be circumstances that might prevent someone from buying new clothes – but we hope that you love yourself enough to dress for the body you have now.

That’s the end of Day 4. A reminder of how to take care of our clothes and also ourselves. Tomorrow is the final day. Now that your closet is in great condition and you know your personal style, we’re chatting about how you’ll approach purchasing clothes in the future.
