Closet Reset Day 5 | Conscious Shopping

You’ve taken so many steps toward a more conscious closet. Your closet is clean. Everything you own brings you joy. You know how to take care of your clothes. And you’re clear on your personal style so you can shop in a way that serves your clothing philosophy.

The only thing left is to discover where and how to shop in the future in a way that aligns with your values.

Make a budget: If you’re going for longevity, many clothes from a slow fashion brand will be higher in price than all fast fashion stores. This is because you’re buying high quality clothes that are made to last. And you know that everyone who made them was paid fairly. That’s why we recommend starting a clothing budget. This ensures that you don’t buy outside of your means. And you can be really particular about the items you’re buying. Set aside X dollars per paycheque for slow fashion spending and stick to the fund!

Use your mood board: If you ever find yourself humming and hawing if you should buy a piece, think back on your style mood board. How would it look pinned next to all your inspiration? Would it fit in and feel cohesive? Is it filling a gap? Anything new you bring in should complement your current closet.

Limit your fast fashion: The general public is starting to become aware of how damaging fast fashion is to the planet and the people who are exploited to create it. But that being said, fast fashion sometimes works better for folks who need more affordable, inclusive clothing. So if this is you, that’s totally valid. But we feel like if someone has the budget to do a big fast fashion haul, then they have the budget to invest in slow fashion as well. Those fast fashion pieces are designed to fall apart and go out of style fast – the journey to the landfill is a quick one. Is there space in your closet and budget to prioritize slow fashion over fast fashion?

Discover new brands: This is the fun… and difficult part! Finding new brands that match up with your style. There are so many incredible brands out there that don’t have the reach or the marketing budget that all the big fashion houses do. We asked our incredible community to tag their favourite small fashion brands and the list is long! Explore some new brands in this thread!
